Research: 3 Minute Wonder

What is a 3 minute wonder?

A 3 minute wonder is a short channel 4 television slot for first time directors to get work published. 3 minute wonders are shown in the middle of channel 4’s primetime schedule, giving their work large audiences. It was seen as the first step into the competitive film industry in the uk.

what is the aim / purpose of a 3 Minute Wonder?

3 minute wonders are normally documentaries that often highlight current issues that our often not in the public eye. One of the aims is to introduce new director and team members into the uk film industry with the added bonus of £4000 to make the short.

what sort of topic would you expect to see on a 3 Minute Wonder?

Any topics can be used with no real brief being set out. But you can expect them to be in the style of a documentary (factual programme). From the 3 minute wonders that i have seen the topics vary from art related pieces to health care documentaries.

3 Favourite 3 minute wonders :

I like how simple this advert is with the central point being an art piece. The 3 minute wonder captures thoughts from a lot of backgrounds all around the same age. I like the way its edited with some of the responses just focusing on the person speaking and others using different shots with the answer spoken over the b-roll. All of the answers felt real with some people loving the art piece, and others not really grasping what it is.

I like the way we hear from everyone that is in ”the team” and gaining little bits of information about their style and their life. Extra clips our used well to show the development of the graffiti throughout the 3 minutes. To me the video takes on a slightly comical feal through the use of the music and the masks that the street artists our using to protect their identity, but I feel like the things they are talking about really show a more serious side and a passionate side to their work. I also dont think that they are setting a bad example as where this graffiti was done they had permission.

I like how the first 25 seconds of this documentary are all establishing the watcher on where they are, also it shows how hidden away the people featured in this piece our. You end up getting involved with the main speaker in the short film. I like that although it is a scary place for many people, the film helps create a funny side, like the complaints about the “food from hell”. It also educates people into what happens before people receive chemotherapy. B-roll is used to show pieces of equipment or if we have moved onto a new roll establishing us to that location. I also just love the determined side to all the people involved that they will get better and it's bad but will get better.
