Primary research/self-generated research.
“Primary research is research you conduct yourself (or hire someone to do for you.) It involves going directly to a source —usually customers and prospective customers in your target market — to ask questions and gather information.”

Their our a few different ways of conducting Primary research. One of the ways is through a 'Focus group' these our normally built up of a small amount of people, who our from a diverse range of backgrounds, this enables you to get wide spectrum of opinions.
One on one interviews could also be conducted to get a more personal and in-depth response from very particular people.
Primary research I have conducted.
I did a survey of thoughts on my documentary to find out people’s
thoughts on the final product.
I also helped my group conduct a survey into a magnum advert to see what they liked and disliked, and also if it made them like the product more.
For my documentary unit I contacted my local council to find out what they where doing and plans for my topic of recycling.
This is a list of examples where test screenings changed a movie.

I picked this website as it had examples of all different kinds of primary research that actualy made a difference, as all content that is produced is for people so if people don't like it it will most likely get changed as otherwise no money will be made.
Secondary research.
Secondary research is research that someone else has conducted outside of the group working on a specific product. Often readily found online, sometimes with small fees applied to access.
"Secondary research is a type of research that has already been compiled, gathered, organised and published by others. It includes reports and studies by government agencies, trade associations or other businesses in your industry. For small businesses with limited budgets, most research is typically secondary, because it can be obtained faster and more affordably than primary research."(https://www.thehartford.com/business-playbook/in-depth/business-primary-second-research)

Secondary research I have conducted.
For my documentary unit I did research into different recycling articles and companies from my local area and compiled a collection of links to the websites I used.

In my re-branding pitch power point I used research that had been conducted by barb for some viewing figures. (Page 8)

An industry website that displays research and facts about film. https://www.cinemauk.org.uk/
They focus on gathering data of sales of all films, this can help big and small film makers see what genres or types of films that would be a safer investment.
Pros and Cons of primary and secondary research.
Picking which kind of research is better is hard, as both have traits that will be a lot easier to do, it just depends on what your making. If you are making a very specific documentary then Primary research like interviews and just contacting people effected will give a much more personal feeling than just finding similar information online. But if your making a historic film then it will be hard to find opportunities to get real primary research, which is when you will have to use secondary research and as longs as they our from reputable sources then your information should be almost perfect.
Quantitative research.
The analysis of data to help figure out the best time to show things and interest of audience and buying habits if its a physical product. Also used to gain quick information on age and gender, these kind of questions our also quicker to fill out.

Before making my documentary I made a questionnaire to find what people did and didn't know about recycling.
An example of Quantitative research. from the professional industry.

This example is from the BFI who collect data mainly from the UK, this means that it is relevant to the country I live in, and also is a source that known brands use to search for certain data .
Qualitative research.
Data that isn't numerical and can't be graphed is strictly definitions. Often a more open ended answer that can show variation in answer types and is more opinionated.
"Qualitative research is defined as a market research method that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication."

In all of the surveys that I have conducted their was always open ended questions that made people give an opinion or to define what was going on .
A film review about "Yesterday"( https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/yesterday-2-review/ )
Film reviews our a good way to get a diverse view from multiple people and often certain people will just look to one viewer if they agree with their opinion.
If you our looking for data like viewing figures or watch times then quantitative would be better. But if you our looking for ideas or changes that could be made then qualitative is what you want as it will give you a lot more detail and opinions.
Data gathering agencies.
A data gathering agency consists of a bank of data which is available to the public, data ranges from things like viewership and TV ratings.
The two big agencies are the Broadcasters audience research board (Barb) and Radio joint audience research (Rajar). They both collect data for TV and radio this helps them learn about audiences viewing habits, which helps TV channels decide when to show certain programs
IMDB and Box office mojo are places where people can write reviews about films which are then collected and gives films a rating.

Audience and Market research.
Research that represents the audience that correlates to your demographic / target audience.
Market research is the process of determining the viability of a new service or product through research conducted directly with potential customers. Market research allows a company to discover the target market and get opinions and other feedback from consumers about their interest in the product or service.

For our unilever rebranding pitch we had to look into the markets that our specific brand was targeted towards so that we could make an advert that targeted the opposite audience.

It helps company decide how to create a production in a safe and legal way, it will also cover regulations and bring up potential problems.
"The purpose of production research is to help companies to decide on a number of factors that will affect how they create their product."

Production research I have completed.
This is a Risk assessment that I conducted for my '3 Minute Wonder' , a risk assessment is need to make sure that everyone on set will be a safe as they can be.
location and talent releases are agreements between you and an actor or owner of property that give you full rights to use the in your production, if these were not done and you used a location or an actor their is a chance that you could be sued.
